Verbal Intimidation
I was recently on the receiving end of being verbally attacked and, unfortunately, lost the battle. Since that fateful morning, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what I could have done differently in the situation to gain the upper hand. Although my situation deals with a renter of mine, I felt that there are people like this everywhere and field engineers are on the bad end of this situation too many times.
On that note, when I came across this blog post today, it really hit home for me and helped me understand what I could do when I come in contact with volatile, infant-like people like this outrageous ren…I mean, onto the story!
Verbal Intimidation
The post defines the act as when someone attempts to generate a range of fears in their target by simply using intimidating words. This could be as simple as telling you that you’re dumb to threats of slander or even worse.
What Should I Do?
I have to agree with the article when it says an eye for an eye leaves the world blind, but I’d rather be blind than to look into the mirror and see a coward. So, instead of sitting there and taking it, stay very calm and try to slow the situation down, as the intimidator will, more than likely, be cutting you off after every word. Use phrases like: I’ll answer that when I’m done with you’re previous question or, We will move on once I am finished. If things get even more out of hand, simply leave the room and, when the intimidator asks where you’re going, come back with Only my mother can yell at me that way. Come find me when you want to have a discussion.
Of course, all of these techniques take a little gumption, first and foremost, but, as long as you stay calm, collected and keep emotions out of it, no one will ever ping you as the bad guy.
