Rockwell Automation was named recipient of the third annual Richard Buzun Award for Leadership and Innovation in eCommerce in September 2009.
Quoting directly from their website:
“The Richard Buzun Award for Leadership and Innovation in eCommerce is named after the late Richard Buzun, the second IDEA Chairman, and former President and CEO of Siemens Energy & Automation.”
“It was created by IDEA to honor a manufacturer and distributor that continuously reach the highest standards in eCommerce and promote eCommerce best practices. The winners are recognized at an award ceremony during the General Sessions of the IDEA E-Biz Forum.”
Dave Stormo, Global Process Transformation (GPT) Program Executive and Mindy Michalski, Project Manager accepted the award on behalf of Rockwell Automation.
I tried to dig into some specific reasons why Rockwell received the award. Unfortunatley I couldn’t find any one specific development or eCommerce feature that I could point to as the reason behind this award.
However, Rockwell Automation makes most of its sales through its distributors. It is hard enough to manage an eCommerce website for simple online sales let ago having to manage a large number of distributors who place large orders consistently and Rockwell needs to fulfill them as promised every time. In this regard features like customer order management come to mind.
Another point about Rockwell’s internet strategy (outside the eCommerce part) is that their website is very well indexed. www.ab.com is the Allen Bradley website and I am amazed at how well (comparing to other companies) they’ve managed their SEO and get their resources like Rockwell Knowledgebase ranked on major search engines.

Thanks for your interest in the award Nima. We recently came across your blog post and wanted to help answer your questions. Winners of The Richard Buzun Award for Leadership and Innovation in eCommerce are selected based on B2B eCommerce best practices. Some criteria includes the population of product, pricing and catalog information within Industry Data Warehouse (IDW) – the data synchronization platform in which Rockwell uses to communicate with their distributors, incorporation of electronic data interchange (EDI) and transaction types, whether the company has met certification standards for their data and if they spearhead any programs that generate adoption of B2B eCommerce. In 2009, we added the option for distributors to nominate the manufacturers that make eCommerce easiest for their business and Rockwell was nominated multiple times.
Among some very qualified competitors, Rockwell Automation quickly proved itself worthy of the honor because of their active participation in data quality programs. By implementing the best practice of using one single platform (IDW) for data distribution, they fully ensure the quality and accuracy of their data, including marketing and catalog, to their trading partners. They have also expanded EDI capabilities to increase electronic communication and automate more business processes with their distributors.
If you have any further questions about the award or the selection criteria, please email us at ebiz@idea-esolutions.com. Thanks!
