Emerson Power Transmission, a division of Emerson Industrial Automation, has announced that it will close its l in December this year. In August 2009, the company announced that it will close its plant in Central New York by September 2010 due to declining sales.
However, due to delays in completion of closing process and to clear the pending customer orders, the company has decided to postpone plant closure by another quarter. The company believes that shifting operations to another North American facility will help boost its sales. Though Emerson has always denied the allegation, it is widely believed that the company closed its Ithaca plant as one of it’s biggest customers – Magna International decided to pull the plug on its New Process Gear plant in DeWitt.
It’s a sad ending for the Ithaca plant which once used to serve as company’s New York headquarters. The plant has seen several rounds of layoffs in the past year. The company currently manufactures bearings, components, couplings and gears for manufacturing and industrial customers at the Ithaca plant.
Emerson gained control of the Ithaca plant through its acquisition of Morse Chain, way back in 1983.
