Cellular modems have been around for a few years now. It’s great for pumping stations and other remote small systems. It’s also a great way to update radio notification systems. Plug the cellular modem into your controller and you have an easy way to text alarm messages to maintenance guys or to text production data to line supervisors. Here’s a great example of an application for cellular modems using Spectrum Control’s Webport device.
The headache in the past has been that someone had to make a deal with the phone company to get the Sim chip to put in the modem. It’s not difficult just something you’d probably rather not mess with as a controls guy. Prosoft Technology now offers an industrial cellular modem that comes with the cellular service deal already worked out. Now the modem is activated right out of the box. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s one less thing you have to worry about to get your system up and running.
