Following are some of the professional organizations for automation and control industry. They are all great places to find technical and non technical resources in the automation industry as well network with other engineers in the business.
ISA – International Society of AutomationWebsite: www.isa.org
Membership Cost: $100 / Year
ISA is a non profit technical society established in 1945. It provides “access to technical information, professional development resources, and opportunities to network with other automation professionals.”
Some of the benefits of becoming a member at ISA are
ISA also has a what it calls “Sections” where members meet (in groups of 30 or more) meet locally to network and listen to technical or vendor presentations.
IEEE – Institute of Electrical and Electronics EngineersWebsite: www.ieee.org
Membership Cost: $175/ Year
IEEE is the largest association for Electrical engineers. If you’ve never heard of IEEE you should be worried. IEEE is an international non-profit, professional organization for the advancement of technology related to electricity. It was established in 1963 and produces 30% of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields.
In my experience IEEE has been mostly a research source to refer to for technical and academic reasons rather than networking with other engineers in the workforce.
SME – Society of Manufacturing EngineersWebsite: www.sme.org
Membership Cost: $125/ Year
SME is a non profit organization that connects manufacturing practitioners to each other, to the latest technology and the most up-to-date processes spanning all manufacturing industries and disciplines. SME was originally founded in 1932.
