ABB holds the credit for managing some of the world’s toughest installations including the world’s largest deepwater gas wells and longest subsea gas pipeline at two Shell production sites in the Norwegian Sea. Deploying and maintaining automation solutions isn’t easy at such naturally challenging installations sites, especially in the oil and gas industry segment.
ABB has developed a dedicated solution called “Service Environment” which meets all automation related challenges in oil and gas industry. It’s an operational challenging as well as economically infeasible to deploy specialized engineers onsite for such installations and ABB’s Service Environment solution lets experts operate, monitor and manage the sites’ automation and safety systems remotely from dedicated ABB remote monitoring and operations rooms located onshore.
For Shell’s automation systems, ABB has created an onshore operations room and a 24×7 service desk in Norway. This allows the company to remote monitor Shell’s automation systems without requiring the need for deploying engineers’ onsite in challenging climatic conditions.
ABB claims that Service Environment deployment at Shell is a classic live case study of how its solution fits perfectly for automation needs in oil and gas industry sites. Apart from Shell, several other Norwegian companies including ExxonMobil, Maersk Oil, Bideford Dolphin and KCA Deutag have deployed ABB’s Service Environment solution.
